The Power of a Great Name

The Power of a Great Name: Walking in the Blessing of Abraham

What comes to mind when people hear your name? Is it integrity, faithfulness, and reliability—or something else entirely? The question might seem uncomfortable, but it's one worth pondering as we explore one of the most profound blessings given to Abraham: the blessing of a great name.

When God Changes Your Name
In Genesis 12:2, God made a remarkable promise to Abraham: "I will make your name great." But here's what makes this promise extraordinary—God didn't wait for Abraham's circumstances to change before changing his name. He was called Abram, meaning "exalted father," but God renamed him Abraham, meaning "father of many nations."

The catch? Abraham was childless. He wouldn't have a son until Genesis 21, when he was 100 years old. Imagine the faith it took every time Abraham introduced himself. "Hi, I'm Abraham—father of many nations." People must have looked around, searching for the children that didn't exist yet.

Every introduction became a declaration of faith.

This is how God operates. He speaks destiny before reality appears. He calls those things which do not exist as though they did (Romans 4:17). Abraham had to declare himself what God declared him to be long before his circumstances ever changed. He had to walk in faith, believing God's word over his current reality.

And that's exactly what we're called to do as believers—declare ourselves to be who God has created us to be, even when the evidence isn't visible yet.

The Key to Abraham's Blessing
What unlocked this blessing in Abraham's life? Personal encounter with God. Every time Abraham encountered the Lord, God blessed him, spoke to him, and gave him direction. This wasn't a casual, once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was an ongoing relationship marked by multiple encounters.

If we want to walk in the blessings of Abraham, we must walk the way Abraham walked—in faith and in relationship with God. We cannot let a single day pass without stopping to look to the Lord and say, "Here I am. What do you have for me today?"

Personal encounter is foundational. It's not optional for those who want to experience the fullness of what God has promised.

Choosing Reputation Over Riches
Proverbs 22:1 tells us, "A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold." While we'd all like the silver and gold too, wisdom teaches us that reputation matters more than wealth.

A good name represents trust built over time. Two people can have the same income, education, and opportunities, but one person's name opens doors because they've built credibility through years of consistent character. A banker once said they don't loan money to signatures—they loan money to character.

Abraham's blessing wasn't merely about becoming famous. God was giving him a name people could trust.

How to Earn a Good Name
According to Scripture, a good name is earned through:

Honorable behavior - How we conduct ourselves when no one is watching matters just as much as our public actions.

Godly wisdom - Wisdom comes from the Word and the Holy Spirit guiding our decisions.

Moral courage - We need people willing to stand for truth in these days, even when it's unpopular or costly.

Personal integrity - Our yes should mean yes, and our no should mean no. When we make commitments, we follow through—even when better opportunities arise.

Psalm 15:4 describes those who can dwell in God's presence as people who swear to their own hurt and do not change. In other words, they keep their word even when it costs them personally. That's the kind of character that builds a great name.

The Example of Joseph
Joseph provides a powerful biblical example of protecting one's name. When Potiphar's wife tried to seduce him, he ran—so hard that she ripped his coat off. He made the right choice in a moment of intense temptation.

Because of his integrity, Joseph eventually rose to become second only to Pharaoh. Not because of money or status, but because of his trustworthy reputation while serving the Lord. Genesis tells us repeatedly that "the Lord was with Joseph."

Joseph lived faithfully with honorable behavior, godly wisdom, moral courage, and personal integrity. His name became synonymous with wisdom and trustworthiness. A great name opened doors that money alone never could.

A Reputation Lost in a Moment
While a good name is built over years, it can be lost in a single act of foolishness. One moment of compromised integrity can destroy a lifetime of credibility.

This is why we must conduct ourselves honorably among unbelievers. First Peter instructs us to live in such a way that when others speak against us as evildoers, they may see our good deeds and glorify God. Our behavior should be so consistently righteous that false accusations simply won't stick.

When we walk with integrity, we can confidently claim Isaiah 54:17: "No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn."

Walking Wisely in the World
How should we conduct ourselves around those who don't share our faith? Scripture gives clear guidance:

  • Walk in wisdom toward outsiders
  • Make the best use of every opportunity
  • Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt

Even in everyday interactions—ordering coffee, getting service, dealing with difficult people—we represent Christ. Our speech should be gracious even when we receive poor service. We should look for opportunities to invite people into community, to extend kindness, to reflect Jesus.

For those in leadership, having a good reputation outside the church is a requirement, not a suggestion. We must be well thought of by those who don't share our faith.

The Balance of Truth and Grace
Here's an important balance: while we should strive for a good reputation, we cannot please everyone all the time. Jesus himself said, "Woe to you when all people speak well of you" (Luke 6:26).

Jesus called religious leaders "whitewashed tombs" and a "brood of vipers." He wasn't always gentle with his words, yet he embodied perfect love. Standing for righteousness sometimes means facing opposition, even from those who claim to be believers.
Reflecting Christ

Ultimately, our name should be a reflection of Christ. We're working toward the day when He will give us a new name written on a stone, known only to Him and us (Revelation 2:17).

Until then, we labor to do the right things, live the right way, and represent His kingdom well. The blessing of a great name comes at a cost—the cost of consistent character, unwavering integrity, and faithful obedience.

What does your name represent today? More importantly, what do you want it to represent? The answer to those questions will determine the legacy you leave and the doors that open before you.
