The Greatest Blessing: Divine Relationship With God

There is a tendency, when we think about the blessings of God, to focus on what we receive. Provision, protection, healing, prosperity — these are the things that naturally capture our attention. But buried deep within the promises of Scripture is something far more profound than any material gift God could ever bestow. It is the blessing that makes every other blessing possible. It is the blessing that outlasts every season, every trial, and every generation. It is the blessing of divine relationship.

A Covenant That Cannot Be Broken
In Genesis 17:7, God makes a declaration to Abraham that should stop every reader in their tracks. He confirms an everlasting covenant — not just with Abraham, but with his descendants after him, from generation to generation. The promise is breathtaking in its simplicity: "I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you."

Consider the weight of that word "everlasting." This is not a conditional arrangement subject to revision. This is not a promise that expires when circumstances change. This is God himself, the sovereign creator of the universe, binding himself in covenant relationship to a man and to every generation that would follow. The only party that has ever broken covenant is humanity. God has never wavered.

What makes this even more remarkable is the nature of what God is offering. He is not primarily promising land, though land is included. He is not primarily promising wealth or fame or military victory, though those things appear throughout the covenant narrative. He is promising himself. He is saying, in essence, "The greatest thing I can give you is me."

From El Shaddai to Yahweh
Centuries after Abraham, God appears to Moses at a pivotal moment in Israel's history, and he introduces himself with a new dimension of his character. In Exodus 6, he declares that he appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as El Shaddai — God Almighty, the sovereign and powerful one. But now he reveals himself as Yahweh, the redemptive God, the one who comes to rescue his people from bondage.

This shift matters enormously. Egypt, in biblical narrative, represents bondage. The Israelites had descended into a place of oppression and slavery, and from the outside, it may have appeared that God had forgotten his covenant. But God had not forgotten. He heard their groans. He was fully aware of his promise. And he came as Redeemer.

This is the pattern woven throughout all of Scripture. Whatever Egypt you find yourself in — whatever form bondage takes in your life — the covenant has not been cancelled. Difficult seasons can change your circumstances, but they cannot nullify the promises of God. As the Psalms remind us, even walking through the valley of the shadow of death, we are not walking alone.

A Friendship, Not Just a Transaction
One of the most striking truths embedded in the Abrahamic covenant is the relational language God uses. James 2:23 describes Abraham as the friend of God. In 2 Chronicles 20:7, God calls Abraham his friend forever. And in the Gospel of John, Jesus tells his disciples that he no longer calls them servants but friends, because friends share in each other's lives and communicate openly.

This is the kind of relationship God has always been pursuing with humanity. Not a distant, transactional arrangement where blessings are dispensed in exchange for religious performance, but a genuine, intimate friendship. God sought out Abraham. He pursued Moses in the wilderness. He walked with Enoch so closely that death itself was bypassed. The consistent message of Scripture is that God is not waiting for us to find him — he is actively coming after us because he loves us.

Old Testament Drips, New Testament Drop
The prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel both received stunning glimpses of what God intended to do for his people — and ultimately for all of humanity. In Jeremiah 31, God promises a new covenant, one written not on stone tablets but on human hearts. He promises that his people will know him intimately, that their sins will be forgiven and remembered no more. This passage, quoted twice in the book of Hebrews, is a direct foreshadowing of the work of Jesus Christ.

Ezekiel adds another layer. In Ezekiel 11 and 36, God promises not only a new heart but a new spirit placed within his people. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would come upon individuals for specific purposes and seasons. But what God was prophesying through Ezekiel was something altogether different — the permanent, indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, which was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost recorded in Acts 2.

These were Old Testament glimpses of a New Testament reality. Every promise, every covenant, every prophetic word was pointing toward the moment when God would dwell not just among his people, but within them.

The Anchor That Holds
The book of Ezekiel, for all its wild visions and complex imagery, ends with a single, powerful declaration about the restored city: "The Lord is there." Not "the temple is there." Not "the prosperity is there." The Lord is there. And this is precisely where the entire biblical narrative has always been heading — not toward a destination, but toward a person.

Jesus himself echoes this in Matthew 28, assuring his followers that he will be with them always, even to the end of the age. The writer of Hebrews draws on God's words to Joshua — "I will never leave you or forsake you" — and applies them to every believer in every generation.

The Inheritance Is Yours
Galatians 3:29 makes the connection explicit. Those who belong to Christ are the true children of Abraham and heirs according to the promise. Every covenant blessing, including and especially the blessing of divine relationship, belongs to those who have placed their faith in Jesus.

The greatest gift God ever offered Abraham was not a piece of land or a legacy of descendants. It was himself. And that same offer stands today. He finds joy in doing good for his people. He has written his instructions on their hearts. He has placed his Spirit within them. He will never stop pursuing, never stop redeeming, and never stop being present.

The greatest blessing has always been, and will always be, that he is our God and we are his people — forever.
