From Bondage to Freedom

Why You Are Not Looking for God -- He Has Already Found You

There is a quiet assumption embedded in much of modern Christian thinking, one so common it rarely gets examined. It is the idea that we found God. That somewhere along the way, in a moment of searching or desperation or curiosity, we located him. We stumbled into a church, or hit rock bottom, or heard a song, and we found him.

But what if that assumption has it exactly backwards?

The Apostle Paul, writing to the church in Galatia, makes a subtle but stunning correction in Galatians 4:9. He begins to say "now that you know God" and then almost immediately catches himself. "Or should I say," he writes, "now that God knows you." It is a small pivot with enormous consequences. Because if God knows you -- if he is the initiator, the pursuer, the one who set all of this in motion -- then your relationship with him rests on a foundation far more stable than your own ability to seek, find, or maintain it.

Before the Foundation of the World
Ephesians 1:4-5 contains one of the most staggering statements in all of scripture. It describes how God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world. Before he spoke light into existence. Before the oceans were separated from the land. Before any created thing drew breath, God looked through the entire scope of human history and chose you.
Let that settle for a moment.

The very first recorded words of God in Genesis are "let there be light." And yet, according to Paul, before that first divine utterance, before the first photon of light ever existed, God had already set his affection on you. This is not a minor theological footnote. It is the bedrock of everything. Your standing with God does not begin with your decision. It begins with his.

This matters enormously because of what it does to our confidence. If our assurance rests on the strength of our seeking, then it is only as strong as our best day. But if it rests on his grace, his calling, and his faithfulness toward us -- as Paul insists it does -- then it is as strong as God himself.

The Danger of Going Backwards
Having established this breathtaking truth, Paul then pivots sharply in Galatians 4:9-10. He is alarmed. The Galatian believers, people who had genuinely encountered the living God, were drifting back into a system of religious observance. They were adding requirements to their faith -- special days, dietary rules, ceremonial rites -- as if the work of Jesus were somehow incomplete and needed their efforts to supplement it.

Paul calls these things "weak and useless spiritual principles." In the original Greek, the word for weak carries the sense of something lacking strength, even something sick. The word translated as beggarly describes poverty and destitution. These are not neutral words. Paul is saying that when we trade the finished work of Christ for a system of religious performance, we are not moving upward into something more rigorous and holy. We are moving downward into something impoverished and powerless.

This is not a problem unique to first-century Galatia. It is the perennial temptation of the human heart. We are deeply uncomfortable receiving something we did not earn. Grace, by its very nature, offends our instinct for fairness. And so we begin to layer things on top of it. We develop unspoken rules. We measure our standing with God by our consistency in spiritual disciplines, by whether we have been good enough this week, by how our behavior compares to others around us. Without realizing it, we have slipped from a relationship back into a religion.

Paul's warning in Colossians 2:8 is just as urgent: beware of anyone who would cheat, capture, or plunder through empty philosophy, human tradition, or the basic principles of the world. These are systems that make promises they cannot keep. They offer the appearance of spiritual progress while quietly robbing you of the freedom Christ purchased.

What You Already Have
Here is the question worth sitting with: why would anyone go looking for what they already possess?

Galatians 5:1 is unambiguous. Christ has made us free. Not partially free. Not free pending further review. Free. And the call that follows is equally clear -- stand in that freedom, and do not allow yourself to be tangled up again in a yoke of bondage.

1 John 4:19 reminds us that we love God because he first loved us. The love did not originate with us. It originated with him. And Romans 8 tells us that God accomplished through his Son what the law never could, because the law was limited by the weakness of human flesh. The entire system of religious effort was never designed to save anyone. It was designed to reveal that we cannot save ourselves.

If you are in Christ, the Father looks at you through the holiness and blamelessness of his Son. That is not a comfortable thought for those of us who are keenly aware of our failures. But it is the truth. Justification means, in the most practical sense, that God relates to you as though you had never sinned. Not because he is ignoring the reality of sin, but because Jesus absorbed it completely.

Standing in Freedom
None of this is a license for carelessness. Freedom in Christ is not independence from Christ. The image scripture gives us is a vine and its branches -- the branch does not strive to produce fruit, but it cannot produce anything apart from remaining connected to the vine. Abiding is the posture. Relationship is the method. The word of God, absorbed and lived in, is what renews the mind and breaks the patterns of thinking that keep people cycling back into old bondages.

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. His presence changes everything.
You are accepted. You are loved. You were chosen before time began. You do not need to earn what has already been freely given. The only appropriate response to that kind of love is to simply receive it -- and then to stand in it, unashamed and unafraid.
