The Blessing of Blessing

The Blessing of Favor: Walking in Abraham's Covenant Promises

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to be blessed? Not just in a superficial, feel-good way, but in the deep, covenant sense that Scripture describes? The blessings of Abraham aren't just ancient promises reserved for a select few—they're living realities available to every believer in Christ today.

The Promise That Changed Everything
In Genesis 12, God spoke directly to Abraham with a promise that would echo through generations: "I will bless you." Three simple words that carry the weight of heaven's resources. Imagine the Creator of the universe looking you in the eye and making that declaration. This wasn't a casual statement—it was a covenant promise that would extend far beyond Abraham himself.

Galatians 3:29 makes it crystal clear: "If you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise." This means that every person who has placed their faith in Jesus Christ has become an heir to these ancient blessings. We're not spiritual outsiders looking in; we're family members with full inheritance rights.

Understanding the Blessing of Blessing
Among Abraham's blessings is what we might call "the blessing of blessing"—or more simply, the blessing of favor. This concept can seem confusing at first, but it's actually one of the most powerful realities available to believers.

Favor isn't fair—it's covenant. This distinction matters tremendously. Fairness suggests everyone gets the same treatment based on merit or effort. Favor, however, operates on an entirely different principle. It's the result of being in covenant relationship with God, not something we earn through our own striving.

Think of it this way: Two people enter a building. One takes the stairs, climbing step by exhausting step. The other finds the elevator and arrives at the same destination faster and with far less effort. Both reach their goal, but one experiences acceleration. That's what favor does—it doesn't replace effort, but it accelerates what God is already doing in our lives.

The Elevator Principle
Favor is God opening doors that human effort alone could never open, or would take significant time and energy to access. Some elevators require a special key card to reach executive floors or the penthouse. That key card represents God's favor in our lives—granting us access to places and opportunities beyond our natural reach.

Scripture confirms this principle repeatedly. Proverbs 22:29 tells us that "a man who excels in his work will stand before kings." Excellence combined with faithfulness creates opportunities for favor to manifest. When we say yes to the assignments God gives us—even the ones nobody else wants—we position ourselves for divine acceleration.

The Priestly Blessing: God's Intent for Your Life
One of the most beautiful declarations of God's favor comes from the priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24-26:
"May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace."

This isn't wishful thinking or a nice sentiment—this is God's stated intention for your life. He wants to bless you, protect you, communicate face-to-face with you, smile upon you, extend His grace to you, show you His favor, and give you His peace that passes all understanding.

This blessing reveals the work of the Trinity in our lives: the Father's blessing and protection, the Son's grace and fellowship, and the Spirit's favor and peace. It's a comprehensive picture of what covenant relationship with God looks like.

Favor as Covenant Confirmation
Leviticus 26:9 contains a remarkable promise: "For I will look on you favorably, and make you fruitful, multiply you, and confirm my covenant with you." God's favor isn't random or arbitrary—it's how He confirms His covenant promises in our lives.

Psalm 5:12 adds another layer: "You, Lord, will bless the righteous with favor. You will surround them with your favor as with a shield." This isn't a small shield that covers part of you—it's a door shield, the kind that ancient warriors could hide completely behind for total protection. God's favor surrounds you completely, protecting you from the enemy's attacks.

Finding Favor Through Finding God
Proverbs 8:35 makes a direct connection: "Whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord." When you find Jesus, you find favor. It's that simple. If you've said yes to Christ, you're already in favor—the question is whether you're expecting it and positioning yourself to receive it.

But we do have a part to play. Proverbs 11:27 instructs us: "If you search for good, you will find favor." We live in a culture obsessed with negativity, constantly pointing fingers and highlighting what's wrong. But favor flows to those who actively search for the good, who choose gratitude over complaint, who look for reasons to be glad even in difficult circumstances.

Proverbs 12:2 adds that "a good man obtains favor from the Lord." Righteousness and favor are connected. This doesn't mean perfection—it means being in right relationship with God through Christ.

Favor in Everyday Life
Favor shows up in simple, everyday ways. It's the perfect parking spot when you need it most. It's the unexpected gift that arrives exactly when finances are tight. It's the meal someone pays for without you knowing. It's the discount given "just because." It's the job recommendation that comes out of nowhere.

These aren't coincidences—they're evidences of God's favor operating in your life. When we recognize these moments for what they are, our faith grows and we begin to expect more of God's goodness.

The Esther Principle
Sometimes favor accomplishes in minutes what striving cannot achieve in years. Queen Esther experienced this when she approached the king's throne uninvited—an act punishable by death. Yet the king extended his scepter, granting her audience and ultimately saving an entire nation. One moment of favor changed everything.

Esther made the effort to approach the throne, but God accelerated the outcome through favor. This is the partnership between our obedience and God's supernatural intervention.

Favor Flows in Community

Acts 2:42-47 shows us that when the early church focused on God—continually praising Him, breaking bread together, and living in authentic community—they had "favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."

When we keep our focus on God rather than ourselves, His favor flows not just to us but through us to others. This creates a culture where people are drawn to Christ and salvation becomes the natural result.

Your Assignment This Week
Here's the challenge: Expect God's favor this week. Ask Him to show you His favor in tangible ways. Pay attention to the doors He opens, the provision He sends, the opportunities He creates. Don't approach this selfishly, but with confidence that you are loved and blessed by your Heavenly Father.

You're not one in 349 million hoping to get lucky. You're a covenant child with a Father who has the resources of heaven at His disposal. You're a candidate to receive whatever He has for you.

The blessing of favor isn't just for Abraham—it's for you. It's signed, sealed, and delivered through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Walk in it. Expect it. Receive it.
Because when you find God, you find life and favor from the Lord.
